My friend Bob Power showed me where this female burrowing owl was living The owl's habitat has been so degraded that it's burrow is now in the dirt under a freeway off ramp. (No it didn't have a grocery cart - but the analogues to a homeless person are quite fitting).

Burrowing owls are going through a serious decline in the San Francisco bay area from 100's of pairs in the 1970's to 40 breeding pair today. SCVAS has a consultant who is working on an estimate of "a healthy population", but the trend is way too far in the wrong direction.

I will be studying this lady off and on - and will be posting her progress on flickr.

For those of you in the San Francisco Bay Area, Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society is having its annual open house this Saturday in Cupertino. A good time to buy christmas presents for your friends and family, help out a good cause as well, and do it with tax-donated dollars. My 2010 calendars will be there as well. Get there early - the good stuff sells out pretty fast.
