Burrowing Owl (Female)
Photographer's words :
My friend Bob Power showed me where this female burrowing owl was living The owl's habitat has been so degraded that it's burrow is now in the dirt under a freeway off ramp. (No it didn't have a grocery cart - but the analogues to a homeless person are quite fitting).
Burrowing owls are going through a serious decline in the San Francisco bay area from 100's of pairs in the 1970's to 40 breeding pair today. SCVAS has a consultant who is working on an estimate of "a healthy population", but the trend is way too far in the wrong direction.
I will be studying this lady off and on - and will be posting her progress on flickr.
For those of you in the San Francisco Bay Area, Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society is having its annual open house this Saturday in Cupertino. A good time to buy christmas presents for your friends and family, help out a good cause as well, and do it with tax-donated dollars. My 2010 calendars will be there as well. Get there early - the good stuff sells out pretty fast.

photographer's words
"We have earned enough memories, stored enough mental emotional images in our heads, from one brief day in Aravaipa Canyon, to enrich the urban days to come. As Henry David Thoreau found a universe in the woods around Concord, any individual whose senses are alive can make a world of any natural place, however limited it might seem, on this subtle planet of ours." Edward Abbey, from Down the River (with Henry)
I spent three days backpacking and exploring Aravaipa with Kurt, Lyle and friends. Wonderful country and wonderful time. Muchas gracias. My triplog is posted on HikeArizona.com

Apocalyptic much?These are not bats...
Due to the fact that my days off are destined to be rainy, I've resorted to digging deep into the archives... to the days when I just "took pictures." Just threw the camera up to my face and snapped. Surprise! Some of those shots can make some interesting edits, eh? lol. No biggie if you hate it, I'm just playing around. :o)
These are not bats... they are the same birds as in the next shot. Not sure what kind
